WORKSHOP with JIM McFARLANE, AWS
CONCENTRATE ON VALUES FOR STRONG PAINTINGS
September 24, 2016, Saturday, 10am-3pm
Focus: Value is more important than color. The clarity of the transparent watercolor pigment on bright white paper is the element that viewers admire and what separates watercolor from other mediums. However, it is understanding the importance of value relationships rather than color that a skilled painter employs to make the painting successful. In this workshop Jim will present a unique style of painting that will insure that you concentrate on value relationships.....and still end up with a strong, colorful and creative painting. Bring at least 20 photographs...landscape or still life. No magazine photos please
Cost: $55 members/$65 non-members

WORKSHOP with MICK McANDREWS
EXPLORING THE MAGIC OF WATERCOLOR
October 29, 2016, Saturday 10am-3pm
During this watercolor workshop we will focus on developing interesting shapes, a variety of edges and value contrast in our paintings. Using these important concepts we will strive to capture the wonder and glow of sunset. Our subject will be Main Street, USA, using photos as reference so we can include buildings, cars, people and more! As we progress through the painting process we will discuss the importance of good drawing skills, proper perspective, basic color theory, and the elements and principles of design. In a relaxed and fun-filled setting we will experience the “magic” that makes watercolor so distinctive!
Cost: $55 members/$65 non-members

PASTEL WORKSHOP with DOUG TWEDDALE
November 19, 2016, Saturday, 10am-3pm
Join pastel artist Doug Tweddale for this "instructional observation" workshop during which he will discuss his travels and demonstrate the plein air process of pastels. Attendees will relax and enjoy coffee and bagels during the first half where Doug, through a slide presentation, will discuss various travel experiences which provided him inspiration for many of his plein air pastels and his recent feature article in the Pastel Journal. He will also do a pastel demonstration during the second half of the workshop. Doug will demonstrate the painting process from a photo to a toned sketch, then to a process of underpainting to set the groundwork toward completing the work. He hopes to complete the demonstration painting if time allows. Doug will also discuss pastel surfaces and various pastel brands. This workshop is to be generative of new ideas and approaches plus answer your questions about pastel and Plein Air painting. Attendees can take notes, take photos, do sketching, and be part of a maximum art experience! Please bring a lunch and enjoy some side dishes provided by GNAL.

WORKSHOP with JIM McFARLANE, AWS
WORKING WITH NON-OBJECTIVE DESIGN AND PIGMENT APPLICATION
April 8, 2017, Saturday, 10am-3pm
Focus: Painting without a Subject. Designing a painting with no specific subject requires an artist to understand, employ and rely on the basic elements of design. This workshop will focus on understanding those elements, and how they are used in conjunction with the principles of design. You will not need photos for this workshop, just a willingness to experiment and reach beyond your present style of working. While the paintings completed in this workshop will be abstract in nature the information covered will be valuable to you in the future no matter what your style of painting.
Cost: $55 members/$65 non-members
