Mixed Media refers to creating work that combines traditional, distinct visual art media – like paper, oil pastel, and acrylics—in the same physical artwork. Although Mixed Media can be traced back to the Byzantine Empire in the 3rd century, it came to the forefront of the public eye more as a coined art term with the popularity of collage in the early decades of the 1900s due to artists like Braque and Picasso. This type of works is as varied as the mediums and artists themselves.
Mixed media is such a broad, all-encompassing topic that it is easy to become overwhelmed before you even start experimenting. During this one day studio, we will take the mystery out of mixed-media and help beginners get started. It will also provide materials and ideas for the more seasoned mixed media artist who would like an opportunity to create in community with shared resources.
In this 3-hour studio learn how to start a page or canvas with different techniques that you can mix and match. Experiment with acrylics, matte medium, gesso, stencils, stamps, oil pastels, and collage paper to create beautiful layered effects. You can create a finished piece or make a variety of backgrounds that you can take home with you to continue adding layers and images.
